I have a site bookmarked called MusicOrb that features a listing of Musical Birthdays for each day. I don't check it often but sometimes when I am at a loss for something to write about, I'll look to it for inspiration.
Today was one of those days.
But I don't want the desperation that led me to this post to diminish the very real Happy Birthday wishes I send along to John McVie of John Mayall's Bluesbreakers and Fleetwood Mac fame.
I'm a big fan of artists and bands that evolve and continue to do new things, and no band typifies this more than Fleetwood Mac. I enjoy all of their incarnations - the early blues of Peter Green & Jeremy Spencer (highlighted here a bit over a year ago) through the rise of Christine McVie, the Bob Welch era, and then the skyrocketing fame with the addition of Stevie Nicks and Lindsey Buckingham. They easily rank among my favorite bands and I regret never having had the opportunity to see them in their prime.
In 1977 the band was in the midst of 2 dissolving marriages, great fame, money, and extreme excess. What sounds like a recipe for disaster, Fleetwood Mac turned into their landmark album Rumours.
This clip of The Chain from the 1982 Mirage tour has always been a favorite of mine. Not only is Lindsey demonstrating the guitar chops that make him one of my favorites, but he and Stevie show the strong feelings and emotions that inspire and fuel their music. Look for John's signature bass riff at about the 2 1/2 minute mark.
