You may have noticed my new "Featured Site" widget to the right. These are served up by a new blog network called Entrecard that I joined a few days ago.
Essentially, Entrecard encourages you to visit sites in the network by rewarding you for dropping your card into the widget on member sites. You can then use these reward credits to advertise and have your card appear in the widget that appears on other sites in the network.I tend to join networks like this hoping to find new blogs to add to my reader, and on the off chance that I might even attract a new reader or two. I have found a couple of my favorite blogs through blogcatalog or mybloglog so it tends to be worth a bit of time to set things up.
My experience with Entrecard has been interesting. Particularly noteworthy to me is just how amazingly uninteresting and blatantly monetized most of the blogs are. I visit blog after blog of pay per posts and articles on how get page rank, trade links, etc...
I've written about the "blogging about blogging" trend before but I am just amazed when I see so many instances of it presented to me in one place. Of the couple of hundred blogs I've looked it, I have found only a couple that seem to be written for the purpose of entertaining or informing readers or personal enjoyment of the author.
The process is actually very reminiscent of the story about the young girl who happens upon a pile of horse manure and jumps in, digging through it excitedly. When questioned about her actions, she answers "There must be a pony in here somewhere!"So I guess that is how I view a blog network like Entrecard. Collectively, the sites that make it up are like a big pile of horse manure, yet I dig through it because, well, ...there must be a pony in there somewhere.
And so here they are - a couple of ponies I have found while browsing through Entrecard (and if you haven't been following along, ponies = good)
Gorilla Sushi - A humor blog that is actually funny. I love the caption contests.
About Every Little Thing - I've been a subscriber to Lis's blog for a while now, and it was actually her post about Entrecard that got me involved. This is one of my favorite blogs, and when MyThermos grows up it wants to be just like it (it isn't nearly as good an artist though)
Temerity Jane: I'm still a bit confused about who actually writes this as it appears to be multi-author - either that or Mr. TJ is asking for advice as to which dress to wear to the holiday party. In any case, it's well written and seemingly paid post and advertising free. And a fellow NaBloPoMo success story as well.
Slightly Mordant - Mordant as in sharply caustic or sarcastic, as wit or a speaker. Fits the bill - a good read.
The Big Bald Blog - While it is affiliated with a marketing company, it's more of an observational blog that occasionally discusses business related topics in a personal, conversational style.
artconstellation - A heartbreaking story, but also an inspiring one full of triumph and overcoming the worst that life can be. I was in tears multiple times - sadness and anger, but also joy as she recounts her healing and time with her S. A brutally honest blog with beautiful writing and amazing artwork.
I'm sure there's more - I'll pass along another round as I find them.
So that's Entrecard. It's not really a review, and it's certainly not a contest. You don't have to write about anything on your blog and link back to me (you can if you want I guess) If you do decide to give it a shot and sign up, give me a shout and let me know what you think in the comments. And let me know if you find ponies of your own amidst the manure.
Oh - and I approved some widgets that are a bit more "ad-like" than I normally would like because of my newness to the system. I don't want to cancel them now as that seems a lot like welching, but I'll be keeping them much more on content from now on once these pass.

While I am enjoying the extra attention from the traffic and comments on posts, I'm most amazed at the jump in subscriber numbers over such a short time.
At this point I'm very excited about the possibilities with Entrecard, but time and effort will show whether it's worth it.
Unlike others who may be jumping from blog to blog to drop their card and run, I'm building relationships with other bloggers, and people that can't take the time to actually participate in the discussions on the blog are seen more like spam than anything else.
Thanks for stopping by and I really appreciate your comment. I am also hoping to find quality blogs and quality readers through Entrecard, and wanted to acknowledge those I have found so far.
The chain droppers don't interest me at all either but am always glad to find a new friend.

Ok, well, it's funny to me!
Anyway, thanks for coming by the blog, I added you to my reader after my first visit here as well. My experience with EntreCard, so far, has been pretty similar to yours. I'm all for social/blog networking, and, as you noticed, not into paid ads at all. I like control over what/who I link to, because I like my readers, it's a good community I've got going on, and I want them to continue to have some level of... e-trust in me. With EntreCard, I think I'm developing a pretty high percentage of denied ads, because like you noticed, there's so many monitizing/blogging about blogging blogs out there, and I just don't think my readers would be interested, and even with unpaid ads, I'm not looking to be any kind of shill.
However, digging through, I actually have found some things worth reading and visiting every day, and have added many to my feed reader, and will probably recommend quite a few of them to my readers. However again, though, I do not know if I will continue with EntreCard after my current cycle of ads come through - I'm not interested in drive-by card dropping as a daily chore, and I'm beginning to feel like a non-team player grinch with all the ads I'm denying, and finding myself approving things that are kind of on the edge of what I'd like to have linked from my blog.
To sum up this disjointed mess - thanks for coming to my blog, sorry I seem like many people, and I'm 50/50 on EntreCard myself at the moment.
The. End.
I too have found some real gems that I wouldn't have found otherwise though which for now is making my participation worthwhile.
And I wouldn't feel bad about rejecting ads - I'm starting to not even drop cards on those sites that I wouldn't read otherwise.

Through Entrecard I discovered (as you did) artconstellation, which is an amazing blog, Gorilla Sushi Jason, who is simply hilarious and a number of others that are truly wonderful! I have to admit I tend to stay inside my category 'humor' when approving and buying ads but...not always. Some of my favorites are Station Atomica, The Big Bald Blog, Mental Refugee, A Crazy Medblog, Daisy the Curly Cat and Great White Snark. I've subscribed to all of them, and I doubt I ever would have found them but for Entrecard.
I popped into a number of the marketing and money making blogs and they do tend to a monotonous sort of similarity. There is one, Marketing Deviant, who I've found to be interesting and fun.
Anyway, I hope you liked my blog! I love writing and I hope that at least some of my posts are funny. I am personally rated NEOE (No Easily Offended Eyeballs) as my blog is not really appropriate for children or non-swearing or uptight adults. I hope I'll see you again!
I do enjoy your blog and I'll certainly be back!

Eh, there're certainly loads of crap blogs on Entrecard. I tend to avoid the CUM LEMME TEECH U HOW 2 MAKE MONEY blogs and so-called internet marketing gurus blogs. There're certainly some gems in the Humor, Entertainment, Personal Diary and Photography (if that's your thang) categories. At least there's blog categorisation unlike MBL where it's a hit or miss (more misses than hits, I'll say).

Just wanted to wish you a very Happy New Year and say I look forward to more time in Bloggsville with you in 2008. Gee. Can't you just wait until NaBloPoMo? And did I actually get an email suggesting blogging every day in the year? O.M.G.
I got the email about the daily posts and I think Gina and I both shrieked out a big ol' "Oh Hell No" in response. Didn't you hear us?

As someone liing east of London, the use of the term pony made me laugh - as it cockney rhyming slang for c**p (pony and trap).
Have a great new year.
You must know as an American that I'm ethnocentric enough to have not considered what my words mean outside of my own experiences...

Have a safe and happy new year

I just checked and myvacuumflask.com is still available for registration - do you think I should grab it?
Thanks for dropping by

I have found a lot of cool blogs, but at the same, many of them are already at Blogcatalog if I just took the time to look there.
As far as the marketing/advertising goes, I don't think I will ever get an ad on someplace like John Chow as it is never available to advertise on!
There are a lot of people in love with this though. Maybe we'll just have to wait and see.
Interesting post, keep up the good work.
