You may have noticed that I don't often, or ever, write about baseball (or any sort of sport) here on My Thermos. Sure, I'll go to a Cubs game on a nice day to enjoy some brews but I don't watch the games on tv and I certainly don't follow any of the non-Chicago teams. I know a couple of the big name players because I hear about them on the news and such but my knowledge is really limited.

But a few weeks back I joined a Fantasy Baseball League. A couple of my nephews put together a league through ESPN and even though I had no idea what I was getting myself into, I thought it would be nice to participate. I am trying to be a good uncle. I have long had a very good relationship with one of my uncles, and while I understand that I can't necessarily recreate this with my nephews, I do want to make an effort to get involved in their interests.
So I joined and have to admit I am feeling a bit overwhelmed by the whole thing. To add to the fact that I have no baseball knowledge, I also have no idea what I am doing with the team management portion of the process. Moves, drops, adds, trades, points, H2H, blah, blah, blah - after a while it doesn't even sound like English to me.
Stan from over at
Fantasy Baseball directed me to his
top 100 players list which seems to have helped in my getting a good team in the initial draft. At least, my nephews say that is the case. I really have to just take their word for it.
This is a head to head league which means that each week I go up against another league owner and whoever has the most points at the end of the week wins that game and then you start over against someone else. So far I am 0-1, but I don't think I did that badly, I just got matched against someone who did really well. Or at least that is what my nephews tell me - like I said I just take their word for it.
So every day I fake my way through switching out some players to get everyone starting, you know to make it look like I am actually doing something. Maybe I can get Stan to just take over for me, you know work behind the scenes so that I don't embarrass myself
(Pay no attention to the man behind the curtain!)
If not, it's going to be a long season - is it really 162 games?
Stan? Stan? Anyone?

--Fishing might have been the way to go. (BTW, there's also fantasy fishing, but you probably don't want that.)
I have a feeling I should be making changes to my team but not sure where to start. I think I have an abundance of catchers and a lack of SS or 2B.
I started the season with 2 pitchers on the DL so picked up some others - not sure what to do when they come off..
I'm about 20 points down this week so still in the running.
I don't like the H2H format - I think I would much prefer a straight points system. This makes every day too important.

And for everyone who suggested fishing...well, I have to tell you that Scott doesn't know any more about that than baseball...
Now if the boys are interested in a music education, Uncle Scott is their one-stop shopping emporium!
It's like you don't even know me...

An abundance of catchers is never good.
Going into the last day of the week, I am up by about 15 points so I might just win this game.
