I originally wrote the following in an email this morning but in thinking about it, I decided it might be worthy of a bigger audience (you know, the 3 of you that read me, rather than just the one person in the email thread.) It has been modified a bit to fit a larger context.
One of the things that really bothers me is when things become de-facto standards, even though they really might not be the best option for everyone. When choices are minimized and options ignored, people are making their decisions blind.
For example, WordPress has become the standard blogging platform even though there exist other very worthy options like Serendipity, Injader, Drupal, etc.. Could these have better served some folks? Probably. Did they consider them? Probably not.
Ask people about web based small business Contact Management and everyone is quick to talk about Highrise, which is indeed a fine product. Is it the best choice for everyone? Could something like BatchBook be a better option?
I think this same sort of thing can apply to music as well. Folks gravitate to "greatest hits" packages full of popular singles and radio fodder. Is Stairway to Heaven really the best Led Zeppelin tune? It's believed to be true, and so it perpetuates - at the expense of Tea For One or Nobody's Fault But Mine. Great songs that people don't hear because certainly Presence isn't as good as IV because, well, because the masses have decided that it isn't.
It's a challenge sometimes to fight this flow but I think it's worth it - and I try to do what I can to support those folks who take on that challenge. I try to do dilligent testing of solutions before I use them personally, and before I recommend them to my clients. I try to dig deep and offer some alternatives when I do get around to writing a BYOBO piece.
Presenting options and challenging the status quo is a goal of mine. I urge people to dare to be different, dare to go against the grain, and not just for the sake of doing it, but rather to make intelligent and informed choices. It's to your benefit to do so.

Good rant, Scott. Keep 'em coming.
I liked the rant process, they may indeed come along more often. I'm just glad to have something posted.
Thanks as always for your comments

I'll admit that when I thought about the idea of blogging, I went straight to Blogger, and minutes later, I had a blog. Then when I got curiouser and curiouser about it, I got a blog on WordPress and fooled around with that a bit. Never thought too seriously about other platforms.
So yes, I'm a perfect example of what you describe in the first half of your rant. Maybe when I outgrow Blogger, I'll do some more serious research. But I don't know when that might be. For now it serves my needs.
And the second part of your rant, pertaining to music...I couldn't agree more. Perhaps I'll use...oh, I dunno, Counting Crows...as an example.
What might just be my favorite Crows song is one I never ever ever hear people talk about, and I would fall over in shock if Duritz ever sings it live.
I'm talking about "Up All Night" off of Hard Candy. If you don't know it...give it a listen. It's a hidden gem.
You know, I'm not so sure you do fit the profile. Its not that everyone needs to do the research and stuff - if you chose something and it works for you, that's fantastic.
I think it's the folks who insist that there is only one choice that bother me.
OK - on to music!!
I love the hidden gems, actually I live for the hidden gems. It's so cool that you have found them. Admittedly Hard Candy doesn't get as much play from me as some of the others (I love the live collections) but I'll give it another good listen tomorrow.
Thanks as always,

On the blogging platform issue... I am indeed a wordpress user, however I spent close to month batting around the various options before coming to a decision. At the time WP was by far the best option for me. The real problem gets to be starting new blogs...
I tend to default to WP simply because I know how to work with it, even though other platforms like Serendipity are starting to to offer better feature support. I think this tends to be an even more insidious side of de-facto standards. After you come to one difficult decision it becomes much harder to separate yourself from it even when you might want to.
Anyway, great post that worked very well at getting me back in a thinking mood during my work day.
