Saturday 12-9 Gov't Mule at The Riviera Theater in Chicago. We got there nice and early and snagged a great spot behind the first railing - slightly stage left.
Opener was Donovan Frankenreiter, who I had never heard of, but really enjoyed. An interesting mix of 70s singer songwriter, funk, and some spacey jams - I definitely need to look him up further.
Then on to the main attraction. Warren and the boys took the stage and proceeded to delight the crowd with a good mix of new songs and some classics. The usual 2 sets with a short break between. Warren ignored the slide the entire first set but more than made up for it during the second. The show was unusually shy of covers - only a great 32/20 and the Mountain Jam bit that has become customary during Game Face. In fact, the intro back into Game Face was such a blowout it caused a power failure. A brief Pow(wow)er Failure Drum Jam and things fortunately got restored. A thorazine finished the show and we were treated to a very nice reggae soulshine for an encore. When Warren kicked in the solo at the end, it truly was one of those great concert moments that makes the live shows so attractive.
So what does this have to do with Free The Music?

Back when we saw this show it was obvious it was being filmed so am glad to hear that a release is forthcoming. Nothing on the website but a recent email blast confirms a fall release. How cool is it when a show you were at is released as a DVD.

Next Friday October 26th brings the return of Gov't Mule to Chicago. It was last December when they last played here, a great show at the Riviera Theater that I wrote about here. A show which was also recorded for a promised but as of yet unreleased D
