Today I am going to do something I don't normally do. I am usually not a big fan of greatest hits packages. I tend to like the more obscure tracks rather than the big hits, and if I am a big enough fan I usually have all of the stuff on them anyway (except when the greedy bastards add a new track so that I have to buy it for just the one song... but don't get me started on that.)
In any case, when an artist has a substantial body of work and you want a primer, a way to discover that artist that isn't overwhelming - a well packaged Best Of can aid in your quest.
So today I recommend for the uninitiated, The Best of
Taj Mahal
With a career spanning nearly 40 years and a multitude of releases, dipping your foot into the pool can be daunting. While I dare say you can't go wrong choosing from his library randomly, this is one of those instances where a greatest hits package can give you a great starting point for discovering this wonderful artist.
While this Sony Remaster from 2000 is focused on the period of 1967-1974 it is chock full of great tunes and is certainly on my frequently played list.
Was glad to see Taj included in the most recent Warren Haynes Christmas Jam - am always glad to see such a great artist become a friend of the mule.
Taj also sat in with the Allman Brothers at the Beacon run last year but unfortunately not at the shows we attended.
