Holy Crap!!

I tried to think of a better title for this post - but that really is the reaction I had when I stumbled across Wolfgang's Vault yesterday.

Wolfgang in this case is the legendary Bill Graham and his vault features an amazing collection of poster art, apparel, and of course - MUSIC!!

If you've read more than a few of my posts, you'll know of my fondness for music, particularly live music - and The Concert Vault is the place to find live music. Lots of music. Great music. Lots of great music.

Right now I'm streaming a Genesis show from The Shrine Auditorium, Jan 24, 1975. Featuring the amazing and wonderful Lamb Lies Down on Broadway w/ original vocalist Peter Gabriel, this show is just smoking.

Don't like Classic Old Genesis? How about The Who at The Spectrum Dec 4, 1973 (which is actually next in my queue) or maybe you would prefer Frank Zappa's premier Halloween show at the Palladium Oct 31, 1977.

No?

Perhaps Pink Floyd's Oakland Coliseum show from May 9, 1977 is more to your liking. How about Little Feat from '76, Chicago from 1969, Humble Pie from 1973, Elvis Costello from 1978, Springsteen in 78, or a good healthy dose of The Allman Brothers Band from 71-74, including a great set from The Fillmore West in Jan of 71 that predates the famous Fillmore East shows.

I've just begun to scratch the surface of what is really just an unbelievable collection of live music, and it seems so have they. The process of unearthing and digitizing all of the material accumulated in the vaults is ongoing so new music seems to be made available as it is prepared.

If you are a fan of live music at all, you must, must, must drop whatever you are doing and visit this site.

Great Places To See Live Music

No arguing with Kevin from over at Pandora who raves about the wonder that is Red Rocks Ampitheater. Naturally beautiful and acoustically perfect, Red Rocks is certainly my favorite place to see a concert - and I have seen a concert or two (hundred) in my day.

My first Red Rocks experience was I believe in 1982 when I had the great fortune to see Steve Ray Vaughan in one of the oddest triple bills I have heard, he was followed by TalkTalk and then Berlin (unfortunately, the guy who took me was with his niece who wanted to see Berlin - or we likely would have left after SRV)

Over the years I have had the pleasure of also seeing Lyle Lovett, Bonnie Raitt, The Allman Brothers and Gov't Mule, among others, and there really isn't any place like it.

I know I mentioned Red Rocks in my Colorado post but this video reminded me of just how amazing this place is - so with that I am elevating Red Rocks to something for which I am thankful - not only for the physical place but for the wonderful and amazing musical moments and memories that I have experienced there.

I'm not one to argue, but....

"Going to eat the best french toast in the entire world!"

A simple post on pownce. A throw away line, I'm sure. Hundreds probably looked at it without giving it a thought.

Turns out she was talking about Country View in Mountain View, CA.

Me? I was immediately transported to EJ's Luncheonette in New York.

First a bit of background is probably in order. I'll keep it brief.

I love breakfast and breakfast foods. I love my weekends because my wonderful wife treats us to a culinary morning masterpiece. Breakfast for dinner is one of my favorite options. In fact, I believe that breakfast isn't just for breakfast any more.
We often vacation in New York (trips typically centered around Allman Brothers or Gov't Mule concert runs). Dining out in New York is very expensive so we have found over the years that we can save a bit of scratch by keeping to just two meals a day. A big breakfast or brunch can keep us filled up for a good portion of the day.
Some restaurants in New York are a rip-off, ($13 for Mac and Cheese, you ought to be ashamed of yourselves....). When we find a good place with good food that is reasonably priced, we tend to revisit it quite often.

Smokin Allman Brothers Show Review...

Quick Review - Great Show. Now that I have had a couple of days to revisit the show a few times though, I'll share my more in-depth review. Gina over at Upside Down Cats is working on a write up as well.

You may think you are being productive...

Tony from Rescue Time was nice enough to send me along a beta invite so I am trying to put this through its paces. Rescue Time sits in the background and keeps track of how I really spend my computer time. I have about 10 days of data in there now and the results are, well, terrifying actually.

Social Internet Radio

I love online music apps of all sorts and just started using Jango - "The Social Internet Radio" service. I'll have details - but in the interim check out my Esoteric Thermos station. Need an invite? I've got 10.

More planned as well, but these are likely to be first out of the gate.

Concert Heaven

It has been over 9 months since we have seen Gov't Mule and almost a year since we have seen The Allman Brothers. I guess I am managing but the withdrawal shakes are starting to get more intense.

I'll get a bit of relief this upcoming Wednesday as The Allman Brothers Band hit Chicago. The venue is the Rosemont Theater which, while not my favorite, is far better than the Tweeter Bank World Center - or whatever they are calling it today.

An Allman Brothers Concert is probably not what you would expect it to be. This is not an oldies band or a tribute band. They are not a greatest hits band. If you go expecting a retrospective of their popular tunes, you will not find what you are looking for. Continue reading "Concert Heaven" »

Square Pegs in Round Holes

I have never been a fan of the "genretization" of music, especially at the artist level. peg

I imagine that if you listen to an individual track, you might be able to say this is a "jazzy sounding tune" or something but to lump an artist in a particular category is amazingly short sighted - and to base your listening upon these generalizations can severely limit your exposure to some amazing work.

While artists like The Allman Brothers Band get placed in the horrendous (and meaningless) Southern Rock category, others are categorized based upon a single hit, and others can't seem to shake an early classification despite their maturity and expanding sound.

Lollapalooza Reviews

Jess from over at The Dead Hub has posted her review of the Lollapalooza Festival. Even though she worked it, sounds like she still had a good time.

There was a time when I probably would have gone to a festival show like this. Admittedly I wasn't too keen on most of the line up but there were some artists there that would have been worth the trip.

However, as I get.. um... older, I find that I have very little patience for large crowds, wet weather, and a festival experience. I don't even particularly care for the outdoor shed shows any longer, much preferring small clubs and such.

Honestly, it has been a joy to see The Allman Brothers in Chicago the last bunch of years as they have abandoned the barns here and played either the Chicago or Rosemont Theater - a much more enjoyable experience to be sure.

Muddy legs

So I guess I've outgrown Lollapalooza and the like -and given this muddy legged image from Jess, I can't say that I have any regrets.
